1340 News Live at Five's Lead Anchor is experienced radio newsman James Gemmell. James is a graduate of East Kentwood High School, Ferris State University and Central Michigan University. He was Managing Editor of the Ferris Torch in 1981-82, and a reporter/columnist for Central Michigan LIFE, from 1982-85. James has degrees in Journalism (Ferris St.), and a dual-major Bachelor's in Journalism and Broadcast & Cinematic Arts (BCA), at CMU.
James Gemmell was a correspondent for The Grand Rapids Press from 1985-86, until his first radio gig in 1986 at WQXC in Otsego. James was News Director at WITL in Lansing, from 1987-89. He's worked in Lansing and Grand Rapids, and has also done news/sports in Detroit, Kalamzoo, Tampa and was a stringer for KCBS in San Francisco, and NBC Radio News.
James won the AP 'Spot News of the Year' Award in Michigan, in 1997.
On a personal note, James is an internationally certified by the Okinawa Karate-Do Association as a 5th-degree Black Belt master in Uechi-ryu karate. He has varyding degrees of experience in boxing, aikido, escrima/arnis, Wing Chun kung fu.
